Overwatch fans know that before becoming an agent of the organization, Jesse McCree was with Elizabeth Ashe as part of the Deadlock Gang. Indeed, while the two may now be at odds with each other, there was a time when they worked together and rose to infamy.
We finally have the chance to learn more about this story with the latest Overwatch Novel. Written by Lyndsay Ely, Deadlock Rebels takes a look into how everything started.
The story is set years after the Omnic Crisis. For those not familiar, this was a time when the omnics, artificially intelligent robots, rebelled against their human creators.
In the American Southwest, the Crisis has resulted in a lot of unsavory characters looking to earn a little something from the chaos. Ripe for the taking, Ashe makes the decision to ensure that her name is etched in history.
In particular, Ashe has been arrested again just as she is about to graduate from high school. Having had enough, her parents make the decision to disinherit her from the family fortune. To get back what she believes is rightfully hers, Ashe teams up with B.O.B., her omnic butler, and a rogue by the name of Jesse McCree. The trio engages in a series of heists and into some fast money as well as dangerous alliances.
On their road to notoriety, Ashe learns that family isn’t just about blood but the people who have your back, especially when you need them.
Deadlock Rebels is the second Overwatch original novel to be released after The Hero of Numbani, which is about Efi Oladele and her beginnings.
